to host a Links Day of Health Resources and Information for Seniors in the Midlands

The Columbia (SC)Chapter, The Links, Inc. and SC THRIVE have partnered to host a Columbia Links Day of Health Resources and Information for Seniors in the Midlands.

 The forum is centered around community needs and access to care for adults ages 50 and older and will focus on the following topics:

Medicare
Mental Health
SNAP

Healthy Connections Prime
Healthy Connections Medicaid
Many other topics relating to general health

Dr. Deborah Davis, Co-Chair of the Columbia Links Health and Human Services Facet, said that she was especially pleased that the Columbia Chapter and SC THRIVE will offer Healthy Connections Prime during the forum, a new healthcare option for seniors providing enhanced Medicare and Medicaid services. She also stated that this is a statewide commitment for all South Carolina Links Chapters to help citizens statewide gain the access needed to obtain health care and other community resources.

Healthy Connections Prime offers better care by making it easier for seniors to get all of their Medicare, Medicaid and Part D services from a health plan that they choose, better value through a care team and a care manager that works directly with them and their doctors and better health through benefits that can assist them in their lives.

The forum is free and the public is invited to attend.

The Links Incorporated is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The Links established the Health and Human Services initiative in response to the chronic health disparities that persist in black communities and result in the decreased life expectancy of African Americans and other people of African ancestry.

SC Thrive is a statewide non-profit organization offering solutions to South Carolinians in need of accessing resources but facing a multitude of barriers. SC Thrive will lead the conversation on access to healthcare, food insecurity resources, and community mental health. Local healthcare organizations will be onsite sharing valuable tools and medical information leading to access to care and local community needs assessments.

African American women at voting booth on election day

Voter Registration Project Partnership With Allen University

The Columbia (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and Allen University announce a voter registration project partnership.  GOTV (Get Out The Vote) is an initiative of the National Trends Facet and a national Legislative Affairs initiative.

WHAT:

The Columbia (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will join the Allen University family in a collaborative effort to assist students, faculty, and staff in registering to vote.  Allen students will perform a skit “Voting for a Cause: A Tribute to those who Paved the Way.”  Following the skit, Link Martha, Link Cynthia, and Mrs. Teshia McSwain, Outreach Coordinator for the Greater Columbia Action Group will address the audience.

At the conclusion of the program, Mrs. McSwain and our Sister Links will assist members of the Allen University family (students, faculty, and staff) with voter registration materials.  Our Sister Links will also distribute a Voter Registration Flyer and “First You Register, then You Vote” information.

The Columbia Chapter of the Links, Inc. takes on Childhood Obesity!

In May of 2011, the Columbia Chapter of the Links, Inc. was recognized at the Southern Area Links Conference in New Orleans for its “Links to a Healthy Lifestyle” and Childhood Obesity Prevention programs.  The chapter received a Childhood Obesity Prevention Grant which is being used to promote healthy eating habits and increased physical activity among children.

In March of 2011, the Columbia Chapter of the Links, Inc.’s won a first place award for its Services to Youth program at the Anna Boyd Child Development Center.  The award was granted on behalf of the WIS-TV and DHEC All-Health Team Award, for the 1st Quarter 2011 Childhood Obesity Prevention competition.  Students and members of the Columbia Chapter of Links were filmed by WIS making a healthy salad from items harvested from recently planted school garden which was a Links sponsored project for the school.  Links members also contributed by partnering with the students and school to sponsor a walking club.

Also in March of 2011, during a Links Day at the Capital event, the Columbia Chapter provided speakers on Childhood Obesity Prevention.  Speakers included:  Phyllis Allen, a state nutritionist, Debbie Hunter, Principal at E.E. Taylor Elementary School, and James T. McLawhorn, President of Columbia Urban League.

In December of 2010, the Southern Area Commission of the Links, Inc., awarded a $2,500 grant to the Columbia Chapter for its “Links to a Healthy Lifestyle” initiative.  Through this initiative, the National Trends and Services to Youth facets collaborated with E. E. Taylor Elementary School to provide 5th graders with six sessions designed to reinforce the importance of healthy eating and regular exercise.  The teams organized activities designed to increase participation in active play and organized discussions around portion control and the benefits of increased intake of fruits and vegetables.

In 2010, the Columbia Chapter invited the Nassau Bahamas Chapter of the Links, Inc. to engage in a collaborative alliance to reduce Childhood Obesity and to promote healthy living for children.  Through collaboration with Richland School District I, SCETV and the Ministry of Education in the Bahamas, the chapters successfully organized a ‘real-time’ webinar for students in Columbia and Nassau to talk with each other and learn about fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods grown and consumed in their respective countries.

Also in 2010, through its Legislative Linkages Facet, the Columbia Chapter of the Links, Inc. supported HB 3297, a bill banning high-sugar, high-fat foods from being sold to South Carolina students during the school day.  The legislation is aimed at curbing childhood obesity in a state with one of the nation’s highest rates of overweight and obese youth.  A survey released by the state Education Department showed one in six high school students in the state are obese.  Bill sponsors state that giving students only healthy options could save lives and money.
